Hampstead Activities for Seniors
Being mentally and physically engaged is an important element of senior care; if you have an elderly loved one living in Hampstead, here are some ways you can help them stay healthfully entertained.
1. Activities at Hampstead Park
Located off of large municipal park is the center for all of the town’s events. It’s home to the Irving L. Adessky Community Centre, which organizes all the activities that take place at the park. There’s also a dog run, ten tennis courts, and a public pool, so it’s a great place for seniors to engage in outdoor activities. Even those with reduced physical capabilities can still enjoy strolling along the designated walking paths, or simply sitting on a bench and basking in the sunshine.
2. Weekly Social Club
Hampstead’s adult sociocultural programs are an ideal way for seniors to stay social within their community. Most of the events take place at the previously listed Hampstead Park, and seniors benefit from a 10% discount on registration fees for all programs; these include movie nights during the spring, fall & winter, and chair yoga for elders with reduced mobility. Yoga is a great, low-impact exercise to help joint and muscle flexibility, all while meditating and de-stressing the mind. Light refreshments are also served. The activities change weekly, so be sure to click here for registration information.
3. Hampstead Pool
Also located at Hampstead park, this pool offers a discounted membership to seniors looking for a way to stay fit during the spring and summer months. Swimming is a great physical activity for the elderly, and there are activities offered here as well, including an adult swim class and a stroke improvement program. Information on how to register can be found here. Becoming a member also grants access to free stroke clinics.
4. Religious Buildings
Hampstead has a large population of religious people; in fact, the town has the highest percentage of Jewish residents of all Canadian cities, and a significant population of Catholic citizens as well. That’s why it’s important for seniors with who practice religious beliefs to have access to places of worship. Luckily, Hampstead has many, including synagogues such as Congregation Dorshei Emet and Bais Menachem Chabad Lubavitch, as well as churches like First Baptist Church and Iglesia Bautista Getsemani.
Unfortunately, the town of Hampstead doesn’t have its own local library. However, senior residents can enjoy the benefit of a rebated library card fee; simply acquire a membership at the library of a neighboring community (such as the Jewish Public Library in Montreal), bring your proof of payment to the CSR office at the Irving L. Adessky Community Centre, and you’ll be reimbursed 50% of the membership fee. This is a great way for Hampstead seniors to stay mentally engaged through reading, as well as having access to public computers!
