Côte Saint-Luc Activities for Seniors

Due to the city’s small size, finding activities and events can be a bit of a challenge for the elderly. This is simply how it appears on the surface, however, as there are actually many organizations and clubs that can help Côte Saint-Luc seniors stay active and social. Here are just some of these resources:

  1. Community Garden Club for Seniors

The Côte St-Luc Seniors Community Garden, for residents aged 55 and over, has been around for over four decades. Gardeners can enjoy the relaxing hobby of growing their own vegetables in a fun, encouraging environment. One notably positive aspect of this club is that seniors can grow and donate produce to MADA, a volunteer-based organization dedicated to fighting hunger and poverty. To register, contact Mandie Aaron, president of the seniors garden, by telephone at 514-483-2826.

  1. Côte Saint-Luc Senior Social Center

This 55+ club meets once per week, on Wednesday afternoons, for social events and day trips. Mentally stimulating games like bridge and mahjong are played, and fitness is also a large component of the arranged activities. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, bridge is the main event. Membership is required, so be sure to call and register (514-485-6819).

  1. Côte Saint-Luc Men’s Club

32 years after its founding, the CSLMB is still an active and prospering club for senior men. Guest speakers (local and national) are invited on Thursday mornings, and other activities, including bridge, choral and discussion groups are organized. Sports like bowling and golf are also played regularly; this is a great way for seniors to stay physically active! Visit the Men’s Club’s website for more information on becoming a member.

  1. Côte Saint-Luc Women’s Club

Senior women need not feel excluded! Similar to the Men’s Club, members of the CSLWC have access to social activities like card games, fitness, entertainment and guest speakers, summer daytrips, and outings. Membership is required, click here to find more info, including contact information.

  1. Aquatic and Community Centre (ACC)

In addition to being the gathering area for both the Men’s and Women’s clubs, the ACC is a great centre for seniors to engage in low-impact, cardiovascular exercise. Maintaining a good level of physical fitness is a crucial element of proper senior care, and swimming is a great sport for the elderly to stay in shape. Additionally, the Côte-Saint-Luc division of the Cummings Centre offers many programs and services at this location.

  1. AGI Alzheimer Groupe

If your loved one is affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, AGI can help. They are a non-profit organization offering assistance through counseling, support groups, and activities for seniors. They’re located in Côte St-Luc and can be contacted using this form. It’s important to note, however, that AGI is not a caregiving agency; if you or a loved one needs physical Alzheimer’s care at home, contact Complete Care Coordination for a free consultation with a nurse.

  1. Mall Walking at Côte St-Luc Shopping Centre & Quartier Cavendish

Mall walking has long been popular among seniors looking to combine window shopping with light exercise. The activity is quite simple: It involves walking or jogging with a group through a mall, during the hours before the stores are open and the corridors are generally empty. For Côte St-Luc seniors looking to stay active, mall walking is a great option for many reasons. Firstly, it’s free, and being in a mall means easy access to amenities like water fountains, benches and restrooms. Additionally, the social aspect cannot be overlooked; even when arriving to the mall alone, seniors can expect to find other walkers, and exercising as a group is always more fun than exercising alone. Both Côte St-Luc Shopping Centre & Quartier Cavendish are ideal locations to start mall walking.

  1. Places of Worship

For many seniors, having close access to religious buildings is an important aspect to feeling at home in their community. Luckily, there are a few different places of worship for Jewish seniors in Côte-Saint-Luc. These include synagogues such as Beth Zion Congregation and Congrégation Tifereth Beth David Jérusalem, and there are also nearby churches for Christian seniors, including First Baptist Church and St. Thomas Anglican Church.
